A Passion for Sailing

I'm a Gin and Tonic sailor if I am honest, happy to take the helm on a sunny day with a steady breeze. I think there is a lot to be said for the idea that "Gentlemen don't sail upwind". I have a very capable team of sailors and I'm always delighted to hear of their exploits back in the office.

I spent some my formative years as Captain on Cyclos III, sailing in high latitudes and it certainly contributed to making me who I am today. Whether dealing with potentially catastrophic weather and routing issues or trimming out the last 0.2 of a knot on the race course, it's a constant challenge and I love that.

Sailing is a great place to find about yourself and others, there's no hiding on a boat. Whether in a 40 footer in the English Channel with paper charts or 40 meters with state of the art Nav computers it's still sailing and something can and usually does go wrong. I love that multi-dimensional puzzle soving aspect of it, constantly dealing with the unexpected. It's not disimilar to yacht broking in that respect!

As a New Zealander I grew up on the water mucking about on boats with my brother from an early age. Sailing is part of my DNA and I have been incredibly fortunate to have developed this into a career sailing and racing on some of the worlds most iconic yachts.

I have always enjoyed watching yachts sailing past from my lounger on the beach.

I was fortunate enough to start my career on one of the most exclusive sailing boats in the world, Eos, but to me it doesn't matter whether it's 95 meters or 9.5 meters, the romance is what keeps me coming back to sailing.

I'm fortunate to be based much of the time in Croatia and we have some of the most wonderful and varied coast line in the world, it's a privilege to be sailing here.
